Senators make a Motion when seeking a particular action. Motions occur on the Senate floor and in committee. To make a motion, the senator must first be recognized, or called upon, by the presiding officer or the chair. Some commonly heard motions are:
* "Madam President, I move that the reading of the amendment be dispensed with."
* "Mr. Chairman, I move that the yeas and nays be called."
