Quick Answers: Military

Most of the questions my staff gets from families of military personnel fall into two major categories: communication with deployed family members, and assistance for the family.

Communications

How can I contact my loved one if the bases are engaged on high alert (or increased security measures) in case of an emergency or death?

The Red Cross is the primary point of contact. The number is 1-800-951-5600. The caller needs to provide a name, birthdate, and social security number of the person contacted.

In the event that a family member cannot contact their deployed relative who would be their contact?

In the event that a family member is unable to contact their loved ones they should seek the assistance of the Family Support Service unit.
  • Holloman- Emergency 505-572-7575
  • Kirtland- 505-846-0741
  • Cannon- 505-784-4228

What options of communication does the Family Support Center provide the soldier and his/her family?

There are several ways of for communication with those who have been deployed. Letters, phone calls, pictures, tape recordings and video are all great ways of keeping in touch with family and friends. Many bases now have the ability to send e-mail messages.

In the event that a member of the military sustains an injury overseas, who would be the point of contact for family members to check on injured soldier?

The Squadron Commander or First Sergeant for the soldier's unit would be the point of contact. Every family member should be familiar with the name and contact information of the Squadron Commander.

Assistance for the Family

Each base in New Mexico has a Family Support Services unit.

  • Holloman - (505) 572-7575
  • Kirtland - (505) 846-0741
  • Cannon - (505) 784-4228

What childcare benefits are available for the family?

The childcare benefits are called "Give Parents a Break."  The program consists of six free hours of daycare a month. There are other daycare facilities on the base but the family would have to pay out of their own pocket.

Is counseling available for the spouse, child, parents, etc?

Counseling is available for the family of the deployed if they feel they need it. It is provided on base.

What kind of support services does the base schools provide to children who have deployed parents?

Support Services are provided by the base. The family can call the Family Support Center and they will give them times and dates of the support services that are available to them.
