The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is an independent federal agency that provides financing insurance to U.S. companies that invest in emerging market economies. OPIC's efforts make U.S. businesses more competitive, increase sales abroad and further the national export strategy.

OPIC provides businesses with direct loans, loan guarantees, or political risk insurance to U.S. investors, contractors, exporters, and financial institutions.

From 1993-1994, OPIC's insurance commitments doubled from $2.8 billion to $6 billion. In 1994, OPIC raised its limit on the amount of support it will provide to an individual project to $400 million.
