Duties
Duties
Just like the qualifications to become a Senator, the duties of a Senator are assigned by the Constitution.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives are given equal responsibility for declaring war, maintaining the armed forces, assessing taxes, borrowing money, minting currency, regulating commerce, and making all laws necessary for the operation of the government. But only the Senate has the authority to approve treaties with other nations and to confirm Presidential nominations.
In enacting these duties, I represent the views of New Mexicans in the Senate. I must consider how every issue before the Senate will affect the state and the people living there.
In addition, I also assist residents of New Mexico who need assistance in dealing with a federal government agency. This is called casework.
To assist me with these duties, I have staff members in both New Mexico and Washington, D.C.
