Interns, Summer 2003 - First Session

Daniel Peters

  • New Mexico State University
  • Mechanical Engineering

With this internship, Daniel hopes to get ``a head start working in a professional environment." Aspiring to be a roller coaster designer in the future, Daniel has chosen to test out the waters of a governmental office with his internship this summer.

Tip for future interns:

``Take pride in every job you do here, no matter how insignificant it may seem, because it's important."

Evan Cochnar

  • University of New Mexico
  • Undecided

Evan came to Washington, D.C. just ``wanting something to do this summer and being interested in seeing something outside of where [he lives] everyday." He believes that the change of scenery, from classroom to Senate office, will be a very valuable experience for the future.

Tip for future interns:

``Focus carefully on what you are doing."

Elaine Landon

  • Northern Arizona University
  • Political Science / Advertising

Elaine came to D.C. ``to find out if politics is what [she wants] to do." She aspires to someday be a campaign manager, but for now is happy to be ``learning as much as [she] can about how the Senate works." Elaine simply wanted to understand what happens ``behind the scenes" of a Senator's office.

Tip for future interns:

``Wear comfortable shoes."

Fayla Lucero

  • University of New Mexico
  • Public Relations

Fayla dreams of one day being able to walk on the moon as an astronaut, but has chosen to give the United States Senate a try this summer. ``This is my first step in getting involved," says Fayla, hoping to one day be a ``key player in a presedential election."

Tip for future interns:

``Walk a lot before you get here because all you have to do is take the Metro and walk."

Kelly-Renae Edwards

  • University of New Mexico
  • Communications

Kelly-Renae aspires to be the President of the United States and hopes that this internship will give her ``knowledge and a stronger passion for politics." She hopes that this experience will help her to ``begin the process of forming [her] own ideas on key issues that face this country."

Tip for future interns:

``When you realize that you really can make a difference in your community and in this country, that's when you are able to understand and appreciate this internship more."

Chet Roach

  • University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
  • Communication Studies

Chet chose to intern here to ``view exactly how individual people, like Senator Bingaman, can change the face of life in America." He decided that this internship would be a great opportunity to explore Washington, D.C. and gain the experience a Senate office has to offer.

Tip for future interns:

``Throw yourself into your work, but don't forget to have a bit of fun."

Nick Goldberg

  • Brown University
  • Political Science

Nick ventured to D.C. to see just how ``things work in the Senate." Aspiring to be ``somebody that makes a difference," Nick wants to ``test the waters" of politics to see just what he is getting into. Though not extremely politically active, Nick remembers toting signs stuck to meter sticks on an election campaign as a child.

Tip for future interns:

``Come with an open mind and try to take in as much as possible."

Josh Medina

  • New Mexico State University
  • Psychology

Coming to D.C. to ``gain an understanding of the East Coast lifestyle and the political ideas that shape our country," Josh aspires to one day be a forensic profiler for the F.B.I. Josh makes it very clear that he has never been very active in government, only noting his participation in a mock supreme court trial as a youngster.

Tip for future interns:

``Be open to a different lifestyle and fellow interns and try to learn as much as you can from everybody. Always listen without prejudice or judgment."

Jesse Watson

  • Wesleyan University
  • College of Social Studies

Jesse came to D.C. partly to find out ``what work [he] can be best at," and looks forward to taking in the unique architecture of the entire District of Columbia.

Tip for future interns:

``Inform yourself on the issues however you can to get the most of your time here."
