Establishing and maintaining healthy individuals and healthy communities requires many different types of effort.  Teenagers, young adults, and all members of society can be actively involved in the decision making and policy processes.

What is policy?

According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, policy is "a definitive course or method of action selected from among alternatives and in light of given conditions to guide and determine present and future decisions."

What are the various roles of a U.S. Senator in impacting policy?

  • National Legislator
  • Constituent Advocate
  • Local Representative
  • Committee Member
  • Party Leader and Consensus Builder
  • Investigator
  • Educator
  • Student
  • Local Dignitary
  • Fundraiser
  • Staff Manager

How can each of us get involved in establishing and maintaining health (individual and communities)?

  • Read and understand the issues
  • Pursue knowledge and skills, through education
  • Learn how to analyze information and communicate your position effectively
  • Become active in local organizations (as an employee, volunteer, advocate)
  • Write to your local, state, national representatives
  • Participate in an internship in local or state government, or in Washington, D.C.
  • Vote and encourage others to vote
  • Pursue a career in health policy or another aspect of public policy
